FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26, 2010

Good Afternoon!

In honor of the upcoming weekend, I going to be short and meaningful. This next posting is very concentrated, so if yo have questions or comments, please feel free to post them.

In life, the recipe is quite simple. Half the battle is just showing up! You can have all the breaks, all the brains, all the preparation. But this all for naught unless you enter the arena, engage in battle and fight for your beliefs. It all comes down to what you truly feel is your reality. What is your battle cry. What do you stand for. With out the fancy clothes, the shiny car, the great stock portfolio, what are you stripped of all your material worth.

So for today and into the weekend, take some time for yourself and for your partner, and ponder the intangibles that define you, not what others think, but what you think of your life and yourself. It is a very interesting exercise and one I can assure you with a high degree of confidence, will yield huge dividends to use a terrible metaphor.

Find your quiet space, light a candle, lower the blinds and dim the light, now just relax, breathe in and out until you quiet your mind............just let it all go, concentrate on your breathing. You are not what they say, you are not what you have, wear or do. So then, what are you, who are you.

Remember, no one writes your story but you, so what will you write about you? What do you want others to know, or just your loved ones, and maybe what do you want to tell yourself!

Have a joyful weekend, see you on Monday,
Robb

THRUSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2010

Good Evening,

I was thinking about the title of my new book, "The Puzzle". You may want to know how I chose the name and more importantly, why? he how is pretty straight forward. I was thinking of a word that all at once would give meaning and at the same time tie the whole idea of the individual and we bring our lives into the light of Joy. Or another way of putting it, there must be a simple, clear and straight forward approach to reaching something we know, something we feel, yet something we cannot quantify.

I was sitting in Temple during the High Holidays in 2005, when our spiritual leader, Marc Belgrad began his sermon ( he is the best) on "Where Is God?" Great topic, Rabbi Marc is always at the top of his game so to speak when he speaks to his flock. As he begins to speak, the congregation is in hushed silence, hanging on every word, every syllable, and every sentence. he speaks for about 30 minutes, it is never enough, but as he gets into the gist of his message, one word stands out. Jigsaw puzzles. He makes a brief reference about the Creator and the pieces of the Cosmos and how the handy work of God is everywhere. And here I am thinking, what a great metaphor, it all comes together for me, it all begins to make sense.

Here is what I have finally figured out. Life, meaning your life, is like one of those huge jigsaw puzzles. You all know what I mean, you go into a hobby store, (yes they really have a store just for jigsaw puzzles), you see the picture on the front of the box, it is a nice picture, even a strikingly beautiful picture. Your life is what this picture is about, at least the idea of your life will be when the pieces of your puzzle are all put together. But you open the box and what do you see? Well did you expect all the pieces would be put together? Or did you expect to see hundreds, maybe thousands of little pieces that represent your life just sitting there in a pile just waiting for you to come along. (You were hoping they would show you the complete picture, didn't you)!

You know they go together, but they aren't together just yet. You have a pretty good idea of what it should look like when it is finished, when it is complete, but it is a long way from finished. Sometimes it is easier, sometimes you go to the store, see your puzzle, bring it home, take off the cover, lay out the pieces. At this point some of you can actually visualize how it all comes together, maybe your life has been just that, you see things and they make sense straight away, right from the get go. But the fact is, though people like you exist, and we love you when we meet you, for the vast majority, we have to struggle to put the pieces of our lives together one feeling, one emotion, one idea and one flicker of light at a time. And this is OK, it is more than OK, it is good. Because in the struggle to figure out where we fit in, we learn all the lessons our puzzle has been telling us. Not in so many words mind you, but as you fit another piece into the next, and then another, and another, you picture, your life starts to come into focus. Piece by piece it starts to make sense to you and for many of us, the light bulb starts to glow, the more pieces we fit together, the longer and brighter the light.

So for just today, believe that all that has happened, all that you have been through has a purpose, the sooner you put your puzzle together, the sooner you see the answers, or at the very least you begin to stop groping in the darkness and come into the light where all is illuminated.

Have a joyful evening!

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2010

GOOD EVENING!

It dawned on me today that more often than not we are looking, searching for that light, the knowledge, that special scroll that contains all the secrets to a full filling and joyful life. I am sure if you are like most of us residents of planet Earth this question has passed through your thoughts on at least one or more occasions. Why do you think we spend so much time and energy asking for what may very well be right within your reach, so close you can almost savor the aroma, sense the feeling as if it were a breeze gently embracing you. Giving you that ultimate feeling of being loved and belonging.

It would be an understatement to say that all that you were, are or will be is right there, right here, right where you are standing. You turn around, you search your immediate surroundings, but you are no closer to discovering your true purpose, your Reason de Etre, your reason for being than you were a minute ago. You scratch your head, you start thinking that you missed something, you retrace your steps, but still can't find this elusive feeling.

Suddenly, you remember the parable of the apple seed and the soul. If you don't recall this ancient story, I will tell it to you. The sages thousands of years ago determined through prayer and meditation that the origins of life and the secret to happiness and unbounded joy lay within the soul. Just as the apple seed holds all that the apple tree will ever be and bring forth, its bark, trunk, blossoms, leaves, branches and ultimately fruit, the same hold true of the soul. That immortal substance that contains all of the essence of life and is the blue print, road map for your life. All that you will become, and hope to be is wrapped up in the seed known as your soul.

The only difference between the seed of a mighty oak tree and your soul is that although that all that your life will be is contained in the soul, the oak tree as no free will or choice, but you do. You can reprogram your soul so to speak by making certain choices, or taking a different road than the one you are currently on. That is a pretty major difference, and one that is the main difference between man and nature. It is also one that you have to fight against and for if you want to lead the life you were meant to live. Free will, at once the most sought after of all the attributes a human has, yet one that often holds you back. It is scary to think you really have control of your life, it is so much easier to have someone else make the "big" decisions in your, it really lets you know that you are in charge of your Puzzle, you are the boss, you are the star in your movie.

So for now, relax, and think about the seed of the mighty oak and the seed of your life, your soul, remember it contains all the answers to all your secrets, but do you dare ask the questions, do you dare seek the answers, intriguing.

Have a joyful evening,
Robb

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 23, 2010

GOOD MORNING!

Well it is 9:00 A.M. in Chicago, snow on the ground and it is about 30 degrees, sounds like a perfect setting to continue our Spiritual Journey. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr you are probably thinking what could be less conducive for getting into a spiritual mode, but when you think about, this is exactly the metaphor I have been writing about.

Anyone can be focused, spiritual and motivated when you live in a warm, beautiful and green paradise, it is even worth noting that these places are exactly where you should be. Guess what, most of us don't live in paradise, we can only visualize this spiritual Nirvana. Now you are getting it, you don't have to be anywhere physically, you can take that trip anytime or anywhere you are. In fact, I would posit that the people that need visualization are often the people we know who are in Florida, California or Arizona.

So here is what you do, and this is a time tested method used by the experts, not necessarily my own invention, but I heard about this and it works. Find a nice comfortable place, or room where you live, set yourself down, take off your shoes or even your socks, place your arms on the arms of the chair, take in 3 deep breathes, let your body relax, close your eyes, you have a candle burning if you like, look at the inside of your eyelids, and continue to breathe. Listen to your breath, watch your breath, in and out, in and out. Let everything go blank, if you have trouble focusing, just listen, listen ever so closely to your breath.

Relax, breath, focus, let the top of your head, your finger tips and the ends of your toes just let out the pressure. Watch the stress just leave, watch it flow away. Try this for 15 minutes a day, make your Spiritual snack time, just put aside this moment for you, believe me everyone around you will see the difference and soon they will want to emulate it. Try it for yourself, don't just dismiss it.

Have a joyful day,
Robb

MONDAY FEBRUARY 21, 2010

Hello Friends,

As you wander down the path of the ultimate reality that defines your life, always keep in mind the fundamental rule of your journey, and this is to not only appreciate your surroundings, but learn the lessons they provide. Lessons you are saying to yourself, what lessons. I travel this path to not only understand my purpose here on Planet Earth, but to enjoy all the pleasures that are layed out before me.

Now you are beginning to understand this Spiritual Trip you are on, may you maybe missing the most important part of it. Yes, you are to partake in all the wonderful adventures and pleasures your senses are being exposed to, but if you miss out on the lessons, both subtle and overt, you are missing out on the most spectacular events you will encounter.

So starting today, open yourself up to all of the colors, aromas and flavors that are offered to you, don't second guess opportunities in the guise of situations and people who try your patience, but only want the best for you and are holding up a mirror of your decisions to force you to look at the obvious. They are sincere and want you to see the possible folly of your actions, often before it is too late.

Enjoy and have a joyful day.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 18, 2010

Good Afternoon,

Next on our Spiritual Journey is the Listener.

The Writers are the creative force of life, the Readers are the interpreters of our collective experience, the Doers are the artisans, craftsmen and all the supporting cast that makes our world turn, that add flavor and color to our lives. The next on our list is the Listener.

The Listener is where we all start out on our journey. The listeners are all of us who are either just starting out, the beginners, or those of us who like the security and serenity of just being. Not going backwards, not moving forward, just a nice comfortable place to hang out.

Now we all have to start out as listeners, how else can we learn the "rules of the road". The key here is to get as much knowledge and understanding of the way the Cosmos. Whether by way of formal education, professional training, trade school, or apprenticeship. We are obligated to follow a well trodden path to gain the insight to understand where our talent lays and therefore prepare ourselves for the journey ahead.

With the proper background we now are ready to either continue our "education" or move forward to any myriad of options. What you do or where you go is entirely up to you. And here you get to decide what level you are ready to ascend and determine of you are prepared by way of life experience and education. How far you go, and what level of discovery you attain is where the excitement begins. Where this all ends is strictly in your capable hands, you call the shots. It is you who determines the results, it is you who also decides if this what you thought it was all about or is it time to switch directions. It is all you!

Have a joyful day!

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2010

AROUND THE WATER COOLER

Once a month I am going to take a break from my book blog to speak to the myriad of questions and comments I get on a regular basis and my usual blog is not the appropriate venue.

What I hear alot about lately is the incessant wining everyone is doing about the state of our nation. As if it weren't enough that we are fighting a couple of wars, crazies wanting to wipe us off the map and on top of this an economy that a scant year ago was going over Niagara Falls. we have a whole body politic (left and right) that can't shoot straight. Now this is a no brainer, you become a law maker, you go to Congress to make life better for the people of this nation. You don't go to the Capital to see how rich you can become or make a pact with the Devil to do his bidding.

By the way, what on this green Earth are all you Tea Bugger's, Flag Burners and Cultural Warriors so upset about. We are coming out of our economic funk, things seem to be working better in Iraq, the World Community is on our side again, and those low life bankers are paying back all that tax payer money we loaned them ( more on that in another column).

Now I hear from a source close to the Senate Minority Leader that there is no way on this great green earth that he will ever, never support any jobs bill. Am I crazy, but not support any jobs bill. How much of a cretin can you be to act this way. This guy should run out of Washington on a rail. They should strip him bare and parade him around the Capital Building with a sign, screw America, screw the people, all for me, me, me!

Well enough of that rant,

Have a joyful day!

Robb

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 2010

Good Evening!

I am rather late with today's posting due to the fact that I was unable to fall back to sleep last night. Ever have a night where you just couldn't fall back to sleep due to the fact that something, or better someone was pushing you to do something. Well I had just that type of evening or should I say that kind of morning, roughly speaking we are in the 2:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M. neighborhood.

Well, I thought about this for a few minutes until I realized that was thinking about my recently departed friend Andy Gelman. Andy passed away last October in a what best can be described as a freak accident, details aside, his passing has not only shattered the lives of his loving wife Franny and their daughters but his grandchildren will never know what a wonderful man their Papa was, nor will they not be able to benefit from his wisdom.

The more I tried to go back to sleep, the more this poem kept popping into my mind. The more I struggled to fall back into a drowsy state, the more this vision of words came dancing by. So finally I dragged my tush out of bed, went into the other room so I would not disturb my wife Fern, and I started writing, and writing and writing.

The following is what came pouring out of me, it is in honor of one the finest men I have had the honor and privilege to know.

Tarry Not My Love
by Robb Packer
Copyright Poet Tree 2010

Tarry Not My Love,
Fore I cannot wait,

Tarry Not My Love,
Fore I will Try to Wait,

Tarry Not My Love,
Fore I will Wait,

Tarry Not My Love,
Rest your weary bones in my loving arms,
And I will Remove your worries,

Tarry Not My Love,
Lay your head upon my bosom,
And I will remove your sorrows,

Tarry Not My Love,
Place your soul in my safe keeping,
And I will remove your fears,

Tarry Not My Love,
Come to me and let me embrace you and
place my mouth upon your lips,
and I will set you free,

Tarry Not My Love,
Tarry Not My Love,
Tarry Not My Love.

Know I hold each and everyone of you deep within my soul,

Have a joyful evening,

MONDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2010

Hi Friends,

There is an expression loosely translated," If you are what you do, then if you don't your are not". I have always liked this quote, like most things I read, it is so concentrated with wisdom that it would takes literally days, perhaps even weeks to ferret out all this is saying.

What this means to me, is that we place way too much importance on things that at first glance seems so be be of great value, that hold great promise, but turn out to be only empty gestures that ring hollow. Why are we so taken in by the brilliance of worthless facades. As the say all hat and no cattle. All flash, no cash!

Why do we? The fact is we all go for the flashy, the brilliant stone, person or idea, not knowing if there is any substance behind what we see or think we see. It is so easy, it is right here and now right in front of us, makes perfectly good sense doesn't it? Well it does in the short term, but is has no legs, no staying power. It disintegrates at the first hint of resistance, it falls apart under the slightest scrutiny, it always does, that is the funny thing about veneer, there is no substance behind it, that is why you can never count on it, or people of such ilk.

You have to look beyond the flashy clothes, peer behind the mirror, pull back the veil to reveal the truth about your self and your life. What do you want, do you really know. I understand that you think you know what you want, but do you really in your heart of hearts, deep in your soul do you truly understand what it is that want?

No easy answers to be sure, so for now quiet your mind, close your eyes, darken the room and just sit and focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out, in and out, slower, slower, deeper and deeper. See the picture in your minds eye, focus on this image............ now just be.

Have a joyful day,
Robb

Hi Friends!

I want to wish all my family and friends a very Happy and Joyful Valentines Day!

To all who I have grown up with from public school, college, the heady days of our adolescence to the all of us who stand on the precipice of our impending 6th decade. Time, space, political affiliation and emotional state can not efface the love, affection and esteem that I hold all of you in.

You have been there for me, from the depths of my fears to the summit of my joy. It is you, all of you who have sustained me, nurtured me and supported me to the position that I enjoy this day. And for this I thank you and send you greetings of joy and abundance.

Love is not only the feeling I have for you, but what I become when I am with you.

Wishing you all the best,

Robb

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2010

Good Day!

Sorry for being so late, but I had such a busy day running aroud with business and personal duties, but I did not want to say good night to such a wonderful day without leaving you with a few words.

As a departure from my recent path, just wanted to comment on the nature of life. I finally see that it is totally irrelevant what or who you believe in. It means absolutely meaningless what your faith is, or what it is not. So it is now time to put aside our prejudices, our misconceptions of life, all of the childhood teaching s we were exposed to, because it has since become crystal clear that we all have been under the mistaken notion that we have been taught the truth, so at least some one's version of the truth. And as we all know, there is but one version of the truth.

The reason for my Epiphany, the source of this news flash is right there in front of all of us. What is this book, document, paper or report. it is much simpler than all this. No conspiracy theories. no long lost wisdom or treatise, and no hidden knowledge.

Simply stated, it is all the books we already possess, the ones we turn to for advise and comfort. The books we read, quote and often live by as a road map for living. What are these books you ask, what is the reason for this announcement? Our "Books of Our Fathers and Our Mothers". Our holy books, our bibles, our books of creation and wisdom.

What are you talking about, what I am talking about are the misspoken, misunderstood and often with deadly results the cause of much of the hatred and death in our world. How can our religious as well as secular leaders cause such division and mistrust among all of us. Quite honestly. how can you read and teach from a book or idea that has changed so much from its original and that which can't possibly be understood by today's leaders who do not possess the intent of our ancient writers. I posit that it is impossible to know what these great teachers taught due to the sanitizing of their works. If you think we re write history today, the early leaders of these holy institutions completely changed the meaning of our most revered holy men and women to suit their agendas, and that people just being enlightened and human could also be divine did not square with their power and control grab thousands of years ago.

So the whole point of this is to be careful and always question anyone who claims to have the Truth. They speak of truth as it were toilet paper or any other commodity and that they have the only real supply. Be skeptical of leaders who play one group against another, or spout their brand of xenophobia and hatred. Question ideas that are so far from the real intent that you would shocked if you had access to the original manuscripts, which the powers that be will never see the light of day. So don't buy into the notion that what you read of what you hear is any more relevant than your own thoughts or ideas, in fact, your spin on the burning philosophical and religious questions are probably closer to the Truth than you know.

Have a joyful day,
Robb

WEDNSDAY FEBRUARY 10, 2010

Good Morning!

The next on our list are the Doers.

These are the artisans, craftsmen, tradesmen and all the supporting cast that makes our world turn and keeps the wheels on the track. What would our world be like without these ambitious and resourceful people. We would be like a room full of blind people groping our way through life.

We count on them to color our world, turn dull into dramatic and take care of the day to day problems that are part of everyday life. What may seem routine and mundane to most of us, is the whole point of their existence. They revel in the constant minutia of problems that only they are equipped to solve. And of course we are all richer for their care on handling our "sky is falling" concerns.

They are often the unsung heroes in our life's play. They paint and hang the scenery, they create the lighting that makes a scene, they write and rewrite the words that make your delivery effortless and a show stopper. They are the supporting cast, the support system in our life that we rely upon to get from point A to point B and beyond. They are really very cool people. They are the unseen and frequently unnoticed hug we feel when out life has begun to unravel, yet never does, as if magically, it all comes together.

I could go on, and as I write this post I myself didn't realize how fortunate I am for these people We call the Doers. Suffice it to say, that we all owe a modicum of gratitude to so many people around us that we just assume will always be their to pull us back from the precipice of the abyss. Well maybe, just maybe we will now give our Doers a warmer smile and a nod to all they do for us, and show them the respect and appreciation they so deserve.

Have a joyful day!

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2010

Good Morning!

Next on our journey is The Reader.

The readers are our parents, teachers, professors, singers, minstrels, lecturers, and our professional people ( doctors, lawyers and engineers), many poets. These are people who don't get immediately like the Writers, but soon after assessing the situation they are able to see the signs and act on it. They are very passionate about what they do and even though they often perform others work, they will do so with a deeper feeling and understanding.

The readers quite often have an insight into the work they are performing that even the original composers did not see or intend which makes the work richer having a much farther reach and meaning. Even though it is the Writers whose beautiful words give meaning to our soul, it is the readers who are the ones who give flight to the souls.

Everyone has a place in the Cosmos and the Readers help us to find our potential, to help us become the people we were meant to be. Now isn't that a comforting thought. That there is a place, purpose and a person to help us reach our highest understanding.

So here is the point, stop worrying about where you are, what you are or even who you are. It is not important because life is so dynamic and ever changing that what you think is the point today may change tomorrow or even in the next moment. Your life experience will dictate your view of life. Just try to enjoy where you are, get as much out of it, embrace it and move on.

Have a joyful day,
Robb

Tomorrow: The Doer

Monday, February 8, 2010

MONDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2010

Good Morning!

I think I am finally beginning to figure this out. Life is not only metaphorically a puzzle, but possibly a series of puzzles that you figure out and then move on to the next with each preceding image holding the key to the next one. So the process is the same, but now I see The Puzzle as the journey and each piece is just another clue to the final answer. Of course this way of thinking makes the whole idea of a Spiritual Journey much easier to follow and comprehend and in so doing allows you get so much more out of your journey experience.

So here is how it all breaks down. There are roughly three to four types of people you will encounter on your journey a light filled and joyful life. They come in the following guise:

1. The Writer
2. The Reader
3. The Doer
4. The Expounder
5. The Listener

The Writer of course is the highest, most evolved form of humanity. They are the authors, poets, song writers and short story essayists. They hear what the cosmos is saying, they are totally spiritual beings, they are our prophets and philosophers. In short they get it. They open the package, put together their puzzle and understand the message immediately! They are so in tuned with their cosmological being that they literally just get up one morning, see the light, and forever follow the path very few of us see, or at least we don't see it for years and years. What my friend Bobby Diamond calls the Muddlers vs. the Knowers. The Knowers know and move on to their next level, and the Muddlers, well they just muddle through life trying to figure out just how to get through the next moment or day.

Tomorrow, The Reader

Have a joyful day,
Robb

FEBRUARY 5TH AND 6TH, 2010

Good Afternoon Friends,

We are all of us so much in a hurry. We plan for the future, we set goals and we think so much about tomorrow that we often neglect today. How much are we missing in our every day life in pursuit of our dreams? What is the point of planning our futures, when we are missing the most important day in our entire life, today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here your exercise for this weekend. Just try to think about the moment you are in right now. Don't think about going out tonight, or even what you will be doing an hour from now. See if you can just be, just live where you are at this place in time. Let this be your island in time. Let it be your moment to fully enjoy. Let it just be.

Take all you can out of this moment. Don't just be in the moment, be the moment. Go and sit in your favorite chair, close the shutters and dim the room, and then light a candle whose sent puts you in a special place. Fully immerse yourself in this task. Then just let go, breathe in, breathe out. Try this a few times and see if you can relax and take it all in. Close your eyes, continue breathing and just be.

Have a joyful weekend,

Robb

Good Evening,

It has been a long day, and now that I am back in Chicago, brrrrrrrrrrrr cold too!

So I just have a short expression and thought to share with you. When in doubt, when you are really not sure what to say when you want to express a feeling of closeness, friendship and loyalty, never ever miss an opportunity to just say I love you, it is just that simple.

I hope you have had a joyful day,

Robb

FEBRUARY 3, 2020

Good Afternoon,

Finding the real you is very much like finding spirituality and joy. It is often masked in layers of life experience and misunderstanding, put another way, it is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. What an apt description of our own lives. Is it any wonder why we have so much trouble trying to figure what it is we are here for and what the purpose of all this is for!

Maybe there is a simpler way to get through our maze? Maybe there is a map already out there that doesn't do the work for us, but helps us along the way? Maybe there is a "Manual for Living a Joyful Life"? Well the short answer is yes and no! What you are probably saying to yourself. How can the answer be yes and no!

The reason for the elusive answer is yes, there are plenty of books by very well known and reputable professionals and authors telling you their answer to this perplexing question, but as you can probably guess, the answers almost always lay within you. How can this be?, you ask. If the answers were always within me, why wouldn't I have looked into myself and stop looking everywhere else? Why would I want to suffer any longer than necessary to find the answers? And why would I wait any longer if I did not have to?

The answer is yes! Why would you wait or delay entering a life of joy and happiness, and certainty less drama. Well you wouldn't if you knew there was a better way. So over the next few blogs, I will lay out a few ideas of finding the answers to life's questions, but instead of referring you to several books (which you certainly can do), I will show you a timeless method of looking inside to your very soul, and within the context of you, guide you through a process.

Have a joyful day,

Robb

FEBRUARY 2, 2010

Good Morning!

Your Book of Light

Every letter, word, phrase and thought defines who you are. It tells your story.
Every moment, every blessing, every curse is a page which turns into a chapter in your life. Do not let others define you or write your story.

A paradigm is a view of life, change your view or direction and the resulting change will follow. The same on your spiritual journey, your journey to understanding. Take an unforeseen turn and you set in motion a series of events that not only alter your present course, but your future destination and maybe that is exactly what you need at this moment.

Certainty is a safe way to travel, always knowing where you are and where you are going. But I would posit the idea that if you are not happy in the present moment, than adjusting your compass and taking that next turn instead of preceding in a known direction may just bring you the satisfaction and peace your soul yearns for.

Always travel in the direction of light and you will find your truth and not someone else's version of your truth. Believe me I understand how much easier it is to have someone else define you, to define your goals and dreams. But I can assure with a degree of certainty unimaginable, that your fear which is only your own misunderstanding of your story will quickly dissipate, the clouds will lift and all that has been a mystery will be revealed.

FEBRUARY 1, 2010

Good Morning!

We often hear of people as they get older or wiser say things such as " I need to travel lighter", I often heard my own dad say he liked lighter clothes as they seemed to feel better, less cumbersome. They seemed to fit his new life style better, easier to travel or move with lighter attire. I used to find these expressions funny in an odd way, not really understanding their true meaning or implied idea.

For younger folks, they often feel the need to travel lighter. To jettison the old baggage of the past, which just another way of saying this relationship is just not working for me any more. The problem with this direction, is that quite often we either don't really understand what we are saying or we are unaware of the implications this action leads to.

Imagine if you will that you are carrying a back pack filled with all your life's valuables and treasures. Also imagine that after a lifetime of schlepping this backpack around, tired and possibly even dissatisfied at the your life you decide it is time to do some house cleaning and really see what is so important that you have spent a lifetime in this pursuit. So you empty your pack and are amazed at the content. Clothes, trophies, several of your favorite books, and of course your shoes. You begin to see the bottom of your backpack and finally you find a box, not an ordinary box, but a very special box, and not one you remember placing in there. On the box cover is a small label with the following inscription. Memories, open in case of life crisis. Inside you find a lifetime, your lifetime of all the things you have done, the people who have passed in and out of your life and every thought and feeling that has passed through your mind. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! You start to read over the scraps that make up your life and you suddenly realize what an amazing life you have lead. Not a life free of strife, worry or even sadness and tragedy, bit a wonderful life none the less.

After spending a few more moments rummaging through your memories you are ready to fully examine the rest of the contents. You decide what you will keep and carry with you, and what you will toss in the dumpster and never give another thought to. For some reason you seem in such a hurry to finish this task that you may have mixed up the things (people) you planned on keeping with the things you planned on getting rid of. How sad for you that if in your hurry to remake your life, to travel lighter as it were, that you also throw out the most precious items you have, that being the people and memories of a once wonderful life.

Just for today, as you open yourself up to new experiences and people, you shouldn't forget what is really important in your life......

Have a joyful day,

Robb
